this is great!
any tips for how you set this up in ableton? Are you able to view your edits in realtime or do you wait for a render? When I tried it my machine lagged badly.
btw - you might want to try vimeo for your video hosting needs.

Hi Felix, thanks for commenting (gave me a chance to fix up a couple of flaws in my code! )
Umm - I basically treat the video files the way I would usually treat audio. The lowest track is the one that shows so it takes a bit of creative layering... The rendering is sort of realtime-ish - the boundaries between clips have a lot of lag, making fast cutting impossible before the export video feature of Live 7.
For this I bounced down the particularly complex cuts into new videos. When you just loop something it renders perfectly.
But yeah, this definitely pushes my machine (much the way audio used to push older computers I had!). I can comfortably run several layered tracks without too many problems (I'm using a Macbook Pro with 4GB RAM, the fast hard disc and 2.6Ghz Core Duo CPU). It was chugging a lot on this project - the other things I've done I haven't had to bounce stuff down so much. Maybe all the audio effects I was using do add something significant too - I always consider audio processing negligible these days though..
Anyway, ramblerambleramble, hope this is of interest :) Cheers

Oh yeah - as for Vimeo - I do much prefer it for video hosting but I value the community aspect of YouTube. The videos on this site come through from my YouTube RSS feed, which is one reason to keep stuff on there. I'm pleased they've changed the aspect ratio of their player (yet to be reflected here).
The other major reason for using YouTube is the iPhone / iPod Touch integration. I like being able to stream videos onto my iPod via Wifi - I Vimeo doesn't yet have the big Apple partnership unfortunately!
