About...

...my approach to music

I’m always trying to make something that doesn’t sound like anything else I’ve done. I can’t resist using dirty heavy beats and bass. I play a lot of different instruments. I’m most inspired by the artists that originally formed movements. I find it just as natural to justify musical structures in terms of filmic narrative as I do by the conventional A-B-A’-B-C-B’-B’-style approach, but you will generally find my progressions somewhat organic. I play off the way the software works (primarily Ableton Live and Reason) – I am very good with technology and enjoy wiring things up to be very complicated, but at the same time I try to keep my setup consistent in order to be able to play it as an instrument in itself.

I’ve been playing live a lot this year – mainly as part of my ‘Installation’ project in a local pub, where I have been doing a sort of live-composition / endurance challenge – that is – I felt I had reached a point with the software where I could literally make up tightly produced pieces of music in front of an audience, for an extended period of time. This feeling turned out to be largely accurate, I’m happy to say.

...this site

I realised I maintain content on all sorts of different websites – I put pics on flickr, videos on youtube, blogs on livejournal and blogger.com, I have my myspace profile- all places that I found myself copying and pasting profiles between. I wanted to bring everything into the same place, and this is what this site does. You can subscribe to a single unified RSS feed and keep up-to-date with the whole caboodle, and know you won’t miss anything.

I built this site in Ruby On Rails (a beautiful framework for making websites, based on a beautiful programming language) and I am frequently improving it.

Things I am working on:
  • A nice player for the mp3s (I will be doing some sound-responsive stuff in ActionScript 3 when the IDE comes out)
  • Improving the header area design
  • Adding long podcasts with chapter details
